  • Coloration: They have olive to brown carapaces with intricate yellow to orange lines resembling a map. The plastron (bottom shell) is usually light yellow.

Habitat and Range

  • Natural Habitat: Mississippi Map Turtles inhabit rivers, streams, oxbow lakes, and large ponds with abundant vegetation and basking sites.
  • Geographical Range: They are primarily found in the central United States, including the Mississippi River and its tributaries, covering states such as Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas.

Behavior and Diet

  • Diet: They are omnivores, feeding on a variety of aquatic plants, insects, crustaceans, mollusks, and occasionally small fish.
  • Behavior: These turtles are strong swimmers and spend a significant amount of time basking on logs or rocks. They are generally shy and quick to dive into the water when disturbed.

Reproduction

  • Breeding Season: Typically occurs in the spring.
  • Nesting: Females lay eggs on sandy or soft soil near water bodies. Clutch sizes can range from 6 to 20 eggs.
  • Incubation Period: The eggs incubate for about 70 to 80 days, with the temperature influencing the sex of the hatchlings (higher temperatures generally produce females).

Lifespan and Health

  • Health Concerns: Common health issues include shell rot, respiratory infections, and vitamin deficiencies. Maintaining clean water and a balanced diet is crucial for their health.

Captive Care

  • Aquarium Requirements: They need a spacious tank with both swimming areas and basking spots. A 75-gallon tank is recommended for an adult female.
  • Water Quality: Good filtration and regular water changes are essential to maintain water quality.
  • Temperature and Lighting: They require a basking spot with a temperature around 85-90°F (29-32°C) and UVB lighting to synthesize vitamin D3 for calcium metabolism.
